Delhi Daredevils have been underachievers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite having good units at their disposal, they have qualified for the knockouts in only three out of the seven IPLs. The team has often been good, with the right mix of impact player, yet they have failed to click as a unit. Rishad D’Souza looks into a team with a fresh set of players and wonders if they can turn the tables in IPL 2015.

The Delhi Daredevils (DD) have been through many ups and downs over the years. From being title contenders in the first two seasons, where they qualified for the semi-finals, to finishing last in 2014, DD have seen the best and the worst in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Although they have often had good sides, they have failed to click as a unit. One could perhaps pin it down to their failure to retain some of their good players over the years. It is in contrast to a team like Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who have retained their core that has been the key to their success under the astute leadership of MS DhoniIPL 2015 Auction: Delhi Daredevils full list of players bought

The results are out there for all to see; among the seven teams that have featured in all seasons of the IPL, CSK boast the best win-loss ratio, while DD have the worst.  IPL 2015 Auction: Kolkata Knight Riders full list of players bought

After a horrid season in 2013, which saw the DD finish at the bottom of the table, the management decided to completely overhaul the team releasing the mainstays like Virender Sehwag and Mahela Jayawardene and adopting a completely fresh team. It was quickly erased from memory that in 2012, that very side had finished on top of the group stage table. One may also say that in 2013 they missed players such as Kevin Pietersen and Jesse Ryder. The new look Daredevils side again struggled in 2014, winning only two out of their 12 matches and no prize for guessing what trick the management pulled out next – another complete overhaul! The new team features JP Duminy as skipper, who will play lead experienced campaigners such as Yuvraj Singh and Angelo Mathews among others. Let’s take a look at the features of this new-look side.  IPL 2015 Auction: Royal Challengers Bangalore full list of players bought

Strengths: DD have picked some big names ahead of the upcoming season. They have the reliable all-rounder in Angelo Mathews, the menacing spinner in Imran Tahir, the experience in Zaheer Khan, the consistency of Mohammed Shami and the X factor in Yuvraj Singh. The team looks very balanced on paper and the leadership of Duminy is something to look forward to. Overall they seem to be adequately covered in every department and don’t suffer from any lack of talent. The experience of the likes of Yuvraj, Duminy, Mathews and Zaheer will help build this side.  IPL 2015 Auction: Chennai Super Kings full list of players bought

Weaknesses: When compared to some of the other teams, DD may fall behind in terms of teamwork as this unit still has to gel. Some of the players have continued from the last season, but the arrival of the new stalwarts means that the makeup of the core changes. DD have to ensure that they gel as a team and convert that potential into results.  IPL 2015 Auction: Full list of players unsold for IPL 8

Key Players: Yuvraj is the obvious name that comes to mind.  The southpaw would be hungry to make an impact as he has been out of the Indian side for over a year. Also, he was dropped by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after a decent season, where he showed flashes of brilliance. Apart from him, the Delhi Daredevils boast two bowlers who took the world by storm in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 – Shami and Tahir. They have a fantastic all-rounder in Mathews and can rely on Kedar Jadhav to perform consistently with the bat. With his versatile batting and handy bowling, Duminy could be a big draw.
