Sri Lanka erred with an overthrow and Virat Kohli made them pay by running four runs IANS

The batting pair of Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara was united after eight long months. The romance continued to blossom. It s about the tempo. Pujara s tempo suits my style, I guess, said Vijay after the day s play. Before your mind wanders wild, let s go through their partnership numbers. They brought up their tenth century stand to help India cruise at 312 for 2 at stumps on Day Two, bowling out Sri Lanka for 205 on the previous day.

The alluring Vijay

That is how the Monk started the proceedings on Day Two. The gorgeous cover drive off the first ball was just the sign of things to come.

Vijay showed positive intent and wasn t scared to play on the up. He eventually perished playing a false stroke to the short fine-leg fielder but not before stroking a classy 128, his tenth Test century (seventh at home).

Prolific Pujara

Vijay took the charge and Pujara was pleased playing the second fiddle. There were occasional treats with excellent use of feet. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, Pujara has scored 1,820 runs at 67.4. He has scored seven centuries in this span, which has taken his tally to 14, on level with the great Gundappa Vishwanath.

Pujara also became the first Indian to amass 1,000 runs in the 2017 calendar year. He will resume at 121 on Sunday. He doesn t seem to tire.

The third centurion

Dilruwan Perera leaked runs today and India continued to milk him till the end. The off-spinner bowled 21 overs and gave away 117 runs for no wickets. In fact, he gave away almost 40 per cent of the runs scored by India today.

Spirit of the game

Ours is a gentleman s game. The day s play saw moments of good sportsmanship. Vijay found a liking for on-drives and he wasn t scared to hit them on the air. A gorgeous stroke saw him dissect the bowler and the mid-on for a boundary. Dinesh Chandiman is a smart man. To prevent that stroke, he soon employed a short mid-on, who stood very next to the non-striker Pujara. Perera was the fielder.

Vijay still went for a similar stroke; the fielder there jumped to his left and got his palms before misbalancing and falling over Pujara. A chance went down.

Pujara being a gentleman left his spot and stood wide in order to make it easier for the fielder.

On this day, three years back, Sean Abbott s bouncer struck Phillip Hughes on the head. Three days later, the Australian southpaw passed away. It was perhaps the darkest day the game witnessed.

Sadeera Samarawickrama, fielding at short-leg was struck by a full-bloodied Vijay-slog sweep. The ball struck his ribs. The Sri Lankan withered in pain. Along with the concerned Sri Lankans, joined in an equally tensed Vijay. The injury wasn t serious and the player was up on his feet, much to relief of all.

Race like Virat Kohli

Other batters stroll, run or sprint from one end to other. Here is Kohli. He simply races. If your fitness is appallingly level good then you will have a tough time batting with the Indian captain.

Sri Lanka erred with an overthrow and Kohli made them pay by running four runs. Poor Pujara, who batted the entire day, had to complement his captain with speed.

Kohli s arrival helped India up their tempo. He continued from where he left at Eden Gardens. He remained unbeaten on 54 from just 70 balls. There were some exquisite flicks and bottom-handed punches.

In doing so, Kohli became the only cricketer to average over fifty across formats. In the last game, he became the joint-fastest cricketer to notch up fifty international centuries. He now also has the most international fifties (19 along with Rahul Dravid) as an Indian captain in a calendar year.

Oh yes His love for dogs is well known and his affair continued.

Coming back to the game. India have now extended their lead to 107, and to Sri Lanka s dismay the hosts have eight more wickets in hand.
