
Since Duncan Fletcher left the Indian cricket team after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, the side never got any permanent coach. After him, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Ravi Shastri the team director. He remained with the Indian side till the end of ICC World T20 2016 and played dual role of coach and team director. After the end of Shastri’s term, BCCI was keen on appointing a new coach and since then, the hunt to find him has set the Indian cricket fraternity abuzz.
As per the BCCI report, 57 candidates applied for this post, including former cricketers, coaches and selector as well. Not every candidates’ names were revealed but few of them did come out, such as Anil Kumble, Shastri, Sandeep Patil, Stuart Law, Tom Moody, Pravin Amre, Lalchand Rajput and Andy Moles.
Out of 57 applicants, 21 were shortlisted and then 11 were called for interview. From the ones who missed out, Patil’s name was prominent. The task of taking the interviews and making the final choice was handed to the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which has Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman as members. It is said that they will take the decision on June 22 and convey it to BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke. Well, looking at the candidates who were called for interview, Kumble and Shastri are front-runners in this hunt Moody is another candidate who may emerge as dark horse in this race but candidates like Amre, Law, Rajput and Moles too carry a good background of coaching.
