Virat Kohli became the 1st Indian captain to lose T20I on captaincy debut IANS

The first T20I of the three-match series between India and England at Green Park, Kanpur was totally dominated by the Eoin Morgan s men against Virat Kohli and his co. After restricting India to 147 for 7, English batsman got off a good start before openers Jason Roy and Sam Billings both were dismissed in the fourth over by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Captain Morgan then took charge along with Joe Root, and anchored the innings with their 83-run partnership. Morgan scored his 8th T20I fifty, while Root remained unbeaten on 46 as England won the contest comfortably by seven wickets. With this exciting contest, we present some interesting numbers for the match.

Kohli became the 1st Indian captain to lose T20I on captaincy debut. Dhoni s debut T20I captain was against Scotland which was washed out because after toss. Kohli also became 5th captain to lead in T20Is after Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ajinkya Rahane.

Green Park, Kanpur became the 16th Indian ground (and 90th overall) to host a T20I. The 15th name on the list was Feroz Shah Kotla, back on March 23, 2016. However, Kotla hosted 4 matches in an 8-day phase, all in the World T20. The last new ground to host a T20I was McLean Park, Napier, on January 3 this year.

Chahal became the 2nd Indian to bowl both opposing team openers in a T20I. The first was S Sreesanth, who bowled Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden in the 2007 World T20 semi-final.

Parvez Rasool became the 67th player for India in T20Is. He picked the wicket of Morgan and became the 6th Indian bowler to take the opposing captain s wicket on debut. The other five Indians to achieve this feat on debut are Zaheer Khan (Graeme Smith in India s first ever T20I), R Vinay Kumar (Kumar Sangakkara), Akshar Patel (Elton Chigumbura), Sreenath Aravind (Faf du Plessis) and Dhawal Kulkarni (Graeme Cremer).

India have never won any match on Kohli s captaincy debut in any format. His first ODI as captain was against Sri Lanka in 2013, which India lost by 161 runs. On his Test captaincy debut, India lost by 48 runs against Australia at Adelaide in 2014-15.

This was England s 6th win against India in T20Is the most by any team against India. England went past New Zealand s tally of 5 wins against India.

India s 147 for 7 is their second-lowest total against England. The lowest remains 120 for 9 at Kolkata in 2011-12, which is also their lowest against any team without getting all out.

Dhoni s unbeaten knock of 36 is his 5th unbeaten innings against England most by any batsman in T20Is against them. Dhoni went past Dwayne Bravo, Jacques Kallis and Andre Russell.

This was the 3rd time India batted more 20 overs but hit only one six (Raina hit the six today). The other two occasions were against England in the 2012 World T20 (Rohit hit the six) and against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2015 (Murali Vijay).

India have a win/loss ratio of 0.22 while defending a total below 150. This is the worst win/loss ratio of any team with 10 or more matches. Bangladesh comes next, with 0.23.

This was the first match of this tour where Root and Roy did not get to score fifty. This was the 8th match for Root in this tour and has registered 6 fifties and a hundred. On the other hand, Roy made 3 fifties from 4 matches.

Dhoni s 36 not out took him past Yuvraj Singh s tally of runs in T20Is. Dhoni is now India s 4th-highest run-getter with 1,148, while Yuvraj has 1,146. It is to be noted that Dhoni is yet to score a T20I fifty.

Dhoni s average of 37.03 is the 3rd-highest by an Indian batsman (qualifications: 4 innings) after KL Rahul (62.33) and Kohli (56.2).

Morgan became the 1st English batsman to touch 1,500-run mark in T20Is and 12th overall. His knock of 51 is also his 8th fifty, the most by an English batsman in T20Is. He went past Alex Hales and Kevin Pietersen.

This was the third time England used only five bowlers against India to bowl their full quota of overs. The last two occasions both came in 2012-13, in Premadasa (World T20) and Wankhede.

This was the second time in his 21-T20I career that Adil Rashid did not bowl. The other occasion was in 2015-16, against Pakistan at Dubai.

Moeen Ali registered his best bowling figures (2 for 21). His previous best was 2 for 22, against South Africa at Cape Town in 2015-16.

Chahal registered his best figures as well (2 for 27). His previous best was 1 for 19, against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2016.

Playing in his 2nd ODI, Tymal Mills picked up his first T20I wicket, that of Hardik Pandya.

Bumrah has now played 33 international matches (11 ODIs and 22 T20Is) and is yet to score a single run. He continues to hold the world record (in ODIs, T20Is, and across formats) for playing most international matches without scoring a run. Krishmar Santokie comes closest with 12 international matches without a run. Santokie is also joint-2nd on the T20I list (with 12) along with Ish Sodhi.

Bumrah batted at No. 9 today. This was the first time he batted at anywhere above No. 11 in international cricket.

The Indian seamers bowled 49 balls between themselves without taking a wicket. This is the most Indian seamers have bowled and yet have gone wicketless. The previous record was 36 balls, against West Indies at Mirpur in the 2014 World T20. This is also the fifth time that Indian seamers have achieved this , including a match against Scotland where not a single ball was bowled.

England won the match by 7 wickets joint-biggest win in terms of wickets against India in India. South Africa is the other team to have won against India in India by 7 wickets in 2015.

With four sixes in today s match, Morgan has now 32 sixes 3rd most by any captain in T20Is after Shahid Afridi (41) and Dhoni (34).

Root averages 73.56 while chasing 3rd highest by any batsman with at least five innings in T20Is after Hayden (133) and Kohli (84.9).

Morgan s 51 takes him to second spot in the list of top run-getters by captains against India after Kumar Sangakkara (183). Today s fifty was Morgan s second against India as captain joint-most by any captain against India in T20Is. Sangakkara and Hafeez have scored two fifties as captain against India. Morgan also became the first batsman to hit two fifties in India and England encounters in T20Is.
