Rayad Emrit has been appointed captain of the Barbados Tridents for the Champions League T20 (CLT20), 2014. Barbados would be without their regular captain Kieron Pollard, who will be turning up for the Mumbai Indians. Shoaib Malik will turn up for Hobart Hurricanes and Dwayne Smith will play for the Chennai Super Kings. Thus Emrit gets to lead Barbados in the absence of some international heavyweights.

A press release from the Barbados Tridents quoted Emrit, “It’s an honour to lead the Barbados Tridents into the most prestigious tournament in domestic T20 cricket. It’s a chance for us to pit our wits against some of the best-known teams around, and show the rest of the world the amount of talent that exists within the CPL. And make no mistake, we’ll be in it to win it.”

The team would be coached by the West Indian legend Desmond Haynes, who was their mentor during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2014. He said, “Coaching in the Champions League T20 will be a fantastic experience, and I’m delighted to be supported by Rayad as captain. He demonstrated his capabilities as a natural leader throughout our recent CPL campaign and was a straight-forwardchoice to lead the team. I’ve very much enjoyed working with the boys and I’m confident we can make an impression against some of the world’s best. ”

Emrit is a fast-bowling all-rounder, who originally hails from Trinidad and Tobago. Emrit has represented the West Indies in two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in 2007, when he was a part of the side on their short tour to India. Though Emrit hasn’t returned to the international scene, he is a big name in domestic cricket in the Caribbean.
