Sri Lanka Cricket has suspended Danushka Gunathilaka from six international matches for breaching the Player Code of Conduct and Contractual Obligation . Of these six, three matches will be effective immediately, as Gunathilaka has violated the Player Code of Conduct and Contractual Obligation during the recently-concluded Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa, at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. The other three matches are given from a suspended sentence of a year, which Gunathilaka was already serving since 18th October, 2017, for breaching the Player Contract, in an earlier occasion. Gunathilaka will also have to forego match fee for the concluded second Test at SSC, mentioned above.

A friend of Gunathilaka was arrested under allegations of rape of a Norwegian woman in a hotel room. Gunathilaka was not charged but was detained for questioning by the police. Nevertheless, he breached the SLC Code that made him ineligible to stay outside his room after midnight or to accommodate guests in his room during matches.
