The Day 3 of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka is set to go underway at 3.30pm (IST) at Headingly, Leeds. At the end of the second day, Sri Lanka faced follow-on and were put to bat again. Two balls were bowled with no run on board. Following England’s 298 in 90.3 overs, James Anderson and Stuart Broad ran over the visitors as they bowled them out for an embarrassing 91 in 36.4 overs. Anderson and Braod shared nine wickets between each other with the former bagging a superb 5-for. Ben Stokes was the third bowler for England to make a breakthrough. Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Matthews top-scored for his side with 34 off 62, while six of his teammates were dismissed for single digits. It was the duo of Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales who scored the majority of runs for England. The local hero Bairstow smashed 183-ball 140 and Hales anchored an impressive innings of 83 off 206 balls. The wicket-takers for Sri Lanka were Dushmantha Chameera and Dasun Shanaka, who claimed three scalps each.
James Anderson broke Kapil Dev’s record after he went pass 434 wickets in Tests. He took the wicket of Kaushal Silva, his 434th scalp and Angelo Mathews his 435th. Anderson had 433 wickets from 113 Test matches before this game. Kapil, on the other hand took those many wickets in 434 Test matches. Both the players have more or less similar average. Kapil’s bowling average is 29.14 while Anderson averages 29.18. Kapil’s strike rate is 63.9 while Anderson’s was 58.1.
