Born September 21, 1963, Curtly Elconn Lynwall Ambrose is one of the most lethal fast bowlers West Indies has ever witnessed. The 6’6” tall and broad frame bowling at over 150 kmph speed, releasing the ball from a height of 10 feet, which can make any batsman feel uncomfortable on the crease. Ambrose has 405 wickets from 98 Tests at an average of 20.99. He bowled alongside legendary fast bowler Courtney Walsh. Ambrose has 225 wickets from 176 ODIs. The most iconic moment of his career can be considered when he took 7 for 1 against Australia in 1993. Ambrose shares his birthday with self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’— Chris Gayle. Despite getting past 50 mark in terms of age, Ambrose has managed to stay fit. He recently featured in Cricket All-Stars series for Sachin’s Blasters.

Earlier this year, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) sacked Ambrose as bowling coach of the team. The 53-year-old has also played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. His First-Class record too is exemplary taking 941 wickets from 239 matches. Though, he has struggled in batting department with 26 ducks against his name. However, he has also managed to score a half-century against Australia at Port of Spain in 1991. He refrained from engaging in verbal spats or commenting off the field on opposition players but his animated ‘hand-jiving’ celebrations were a joy to watch.

Ambrose has been vocal about his ideas against WICB. He expressed his sadness when they sacked him as bowling coach and also questioned the decision to sack Phil Simmons before Pakistan series recently. Only a few know that Ambrose first played basketball. He is known to terrorise England batsmen in his career. After retiring from international cricket Ambrose joined the band ‘Spirited’ as a bassist.
