As many as four India batsmen got half-centuries on the opening day of their three-day Tour match against Essex on Wednesday. Dinesh Karthik was the top-scorer remaining unbeaten on 82 as India finished the day on 322/6 in 84 overs. Apart from Karthik, captain Virat Kohli (68), KL Rahul (58) and Murali Vijay (53) also struck fifties as India recovered from a bad start after losing two wickets inside three overs.

Shikhar Dhawan was out for a golden duck while Cheteshwar Pujara only managed a single. Ajinkya Rahane got a start but was out on 17. Matt Coles (2/31) and Paul Walter (2/90) picked up two wickets each while Matthew Quinn and Aron Nijjar chipped in with a wicket each.
