Sri Lanka Head Coach Marvan Atapattu has resigned from the post of Sri Lanka’s Head Coach follwoing Sri Lanka’s 1-2 loss against India in the recently concluded home series. Atapattu was appointed as the batting coach in 2011 and toured England along with the Sri Lankan team, which also included interim Coach Stuart Law. In the meantime, he was also considered for the post of the Head Coach. He was in contention to become the chief national Coach as well, but Paul Farbrace was selected and Atapattu was promoted to the post of Assistant Coach. After Farbrace’s unexpected exit, Atapattu became the interim Head Coach of the Sri Lankan team. “Sri Lanka Cricket thanks Mr. Atapattu for his efforts as Head Coach and Batting Coach of the Sri Lanka cricket team, and we wish him every success in all his future endeavours,” a statement from Sri Lankan board said.
Sri Lanka lost the series against India, giving the visitors their first win on Sri Lankan soil in years. Sri Lanka managed to win the first Test at Galle by 63 runs but lost the remaining two Tests by huge margins. it was a similar scenario in the previous series against Pakistan, but Sri Lanka lost the plot and went on to lose that series 1-2 as well. Skipper Angelo Mathews has had the backing from his players Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), but he has to convert them to victories. In the recently concluded series against India, Mathews scored two centuries, but on both occasions, his team fell short. Atapattu could have resigned due to the back-to-back losses.
