Matthew Maynard named new director of Somerset

Former Glamorgan stalwart Matthew Maynard was on Tuesday named as new director of cricket of English county Somerset. Maynard, 48, was understood to be vying with former England one-day coach Ashley Giles for the post, which became vacant when Dave Nosworthy left Taunton.

Maynard brings with him the experience of a 20-year playing career with Glamorgan, during which he took part in four Tests and 14 one-day internationals for England.

Having turned his hand to coaching he returned to the international set-up, working for England as Duncan Fletcher’s assistant coach between 2004 and 2007.

“I am absolutely delighted to be appointed as the director of cricket at Somerset CCC. It’s a huge honour. It will be a new challenge for me and one that I am looking forward to very much. I’m very excited about being involved with such a talented group of players and I can’t wait to get started,” Maynard said.

Maynard’s overwhelming priority will be a first piece of silverware since 2005 – a period where Somerset have become the perennial bridesmaids of county cricket, with several second-placed finishes across all formats – with a first ever county championship the long-held dream.
