The West Indians are ‘champions’, and it’s an established fact now. After winning their second World T20 title and sweeping all three ICC titles this year so far (the World T20, women’s T20 World Cup and the Under-19 World Cup), the champions from the Caribbean gathered on Sunday to catch one of their legends and an all-time great Usain Bolt compete in the 100m race at Rio Olympics. Darren Sammy, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, Darren Bravo et al were present at the same venue along with a host of media-persons and friends to watch the legend run live. Before the contest started, each one of them present there was sure of Bolt winning the gold. One of their greatest fast bowlers Michael Holding, who was not at the venue, had already predicted Bolt’s win, saying, “I can safely say I was never in doubt that Usain Bolt would win again and in fact, I gave a fellow commentator in the SKY (commentary) box odds of 5/1 that Gatlin would not beat him.”
When the race began, all the cricketers started cheering for Bolt, who, as expected, won the race and the gold medal. Check the video here:
It was his third consecutive win at the Olympics in 100m race. With this win, Bolt has perhaps earned the honour of being mentioned in the same breath with the all-time greats like Mohammad Ali, Pele and Michael Jordan. His win was not just celebrated by his compatriot Gayle and other fellow West Indian cricketers, but by the cricketers world over. Read who said what on his win here:
