Batsmen who fell one-run short of their double century in Tests

In the game of cricket, batting records are often considered as big when someone scores hundred, double hundred, triple hundred or quadruple hundred but not often when a batsman gets out on 99. There have been plenty of occasions in Tests when batsmen fell one short of their century. But as we move up from hundred to double hundred, this figure becomes rare.

There have been 83 occasions when batsmen got out at the score of 99 in Tests and 18 occasions when player fell one-run short of 150. Keeping 100 and 150 aside, there have been 296 times when batsmen got out at the score of 49.

It is evident that as we move up in the ladder, the occasions of batsmen getting out on one-run short of the milestone become less. There are total 10 occasions of batsmen falling a run short from double century; eight of them got out while two remained unbeaten and they are Andy Flower and Kumar Sangakkara. In both the cases, Flower’s and Sangakkara’s respective teams got all out and that is the only reason behind them being the only two players to remain unbeaten on such score. ALSO READ: Infographic: Times when India have won two or more Tests in overseas series

Moving up from 199 to 249, there has been only one batsman in the history of cricket to get out at this score and he is former Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2004. After 249, 299 is surely a big score and only two batsmen managed to get there with one remained unbeaten and one got out. Don Bradman is the only batsman to remain unbeaten on 299 and this too happened because his side was all out. He did this against South Africa at Adelaide in 1932 and later Martin Crowe became the first batsman to get out at 299. Crowe achieved this feat against Sri Lanka in 1991.

The score of 349 and 399 is still virgin as no batsman has managed to either get out or remain unbeaten. Meanwhile, we present an infographic of batsmen who fell at the score of 199 in Tests. The scores of 349 and 399 are still an isolated territory, as no batsman has managed to either get out or remain unbeaten on them.
