Abhishek Nayar has been one of main batsmen for Mumbai since his debut in 2005-06. Nayar is not only an aggressive batsman but is a useful bowler who relies on movement. However, it is his batting stance that attracts a lot of attention. He crouches low before facing and then gets into position to play his strokes. An average of over 50 in First-Class cricket suggests that he has the temperament for the longer version.
After a tough season in 2005-06, Nayar made an impact in 2006-07 as he 360 runs at an average of 51.42. Later, he also performed well for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he showed the ability to take the attack to the opposition. In 2008-09, he had another good season, where he scored 99 in the final and took Mumbai to victory.
Nayar was then picked for the One-Day International (ODI) tour to the West Indies, where he played two games, but did not get a bat or a bowl. Nayar also made it into the side for the ICC Champions Trophy 2009, where he played against the West Indies; though he got to bat this time, he remained unbeaten without scoring a run.
Nayar had another good season in 2009-10 and was picked for the ODIs against South Africa at home. In 2012-13, he smashed close to 1,000 runs as Mumbai clinched their 40th Ranji Trophy title. Nayar continues to be in India’s representative sides. He has played for the Kingx XI Punjab and the Pune Warriors India in the past. He was picked by Rajasthan Royals in 2014.
