Andre Russell Biography

Andre Russell came into the West Indies Test team in 2010 for the tour of Sri Lanka as a fast bowler. Taking the new ball for them in the Galle Test, he dismissed Tillakaratne Dilshan second ball having him caught at mid-on. However, Russell hasn’t played a Test since and has now become the typical modern cricketer — one who can hit it a mile and bowl some crucial overs. He is also a good fielder, capable of athletic brilliance on the park.

Russell caught the eye with some performances with the bat. In only his second ODI against England in the 2011 World Cup, he recorded a four-wicket haul and smashed 49. But, it was during the ODI series against India after the World Cup that he made a serious impression. In one of the games he smashed a quickfire 92 not out to lift the West Indies.

Later that year he recorded more impressive performances in India. That helped Russell win a contract with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. He was also a part of the side that won the ICC World T20 2012.

That hitting talent when combined with the other facets has helped him ply his trade in England and Bangladesh. He did spend some time outside the West Indies side due to inconsistencies. He was picked by the Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL 2014 auctions.

Though he did not play for a major part of their title winning season, he made a mark in their first CLT20 2014 match against Chennai Super Kings when he smashed them to victory from a helpless position. This came at the back of some breathtaking performances in the CPL, where he has been a crucial part of the Jamaica Tallawahs franchise.
