It’s a beautiful sight to see a pacer catch the batsmen in trance with outrageous swing. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, over the years, has persistently been doing the same. He dismantled defences of many batsmen with salient bowling skills. He can roll his wrist both ways, generating ‘banana’ in-swingers and out-swingers. However, what makes him even more special is his exceptional ability to control the swing, and maintain a disciplined line and length.
There were talks of his talent when he handed Sachin Tendulkar his maiden duck in Indian First-Class cricket. Such was his diligence that he, unlike many, translated talent into performance, and produced many great spells ever since.
He outfoxed Mohammad Hafeez with a wily in-swinger, uprooting his stumps with the first ball of his ODI career. As a matter of fact, his maiden wickets in all three formats have been bowled, making him the only bowler to do so.
He has been one of the vital aspects of Indian pace bowling, be it picking up wickets with new ball or bowling deadly yorkers in the death overs, he is armoured with a smart cricketing brain.
Meerut-born Bhuvneshwar idolises Praveen Kumar, who is also renowned for swinging the ball both ways. And, like Praveen, ‘Bhuvi’ displayed a stellar performance in the English conditions. He played a pivotal role in India’s historic victory over England at Lord’s, which came after 28 years.
Bhuvneshwar registered a stunning six-for in the second innings, which includes the dismissals of the top four batsmen. Moreover, he stitched 90-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane in the first innings and 99-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja in the second. In the previous Test, at Trent Bridge, he had added 111 with Mohammed Shami for the 10th wicket. As famed he is for his bowling, he also possesses a traditional batting style.
All in all, he scored 3 half-centuries in that tour and bagged 19 wickets at 26.62, which is the most by an Indian bowler against the English in a Test series. Eventually, he was named Indian Player of the Series.
Bhuvneshwar’s performance timeline has been quite similar in IPL as well. He won the Purple Cap in IPL 9, guiding his team to maiden IPL title.
His hunger to perform and insuperable will to get better his skills is what keeps him ahead in the race.
