George Bradley Hogg suffered from being born in the wrong era. Had he been born a decade on either side, he could have had a much longer ODI career. With competition from no less a bowler than Shane Warne, Hogg was only able to establish himself in Australia’s limited-overs team for a brief period from 2003 to 2008, following the great man’s premature retirement from ODIs. A Chinaman bowler with an excellent wrong ’un, Hogg enjoyed a late but productive international career and an even more impressive T20 career; he is still active well into his 40s.
Having made his ODI debut in 1996, Hogg had to wait for six years before getting another game. He was more or less a regular feature of Australia’s ODI set-up after that till his retirement in 2008. Hogg was an integral part of two of Australia’s World Cup-winning sides (2003 and 2007) and retired with the second-most wickets by an Australian spinner in ODIs. He came out of international retirement to play for Australia in the 2012 and 2014 T20 World Cups.
Unfortunately for Hogg and Australia, he was never able to take to Test cricket with the fluency he did ODIs and T20s, and as a result played a mere 7 Tests spread across 12 years, in which he took 17 wickets at an average of 55. It was a surprising return for someone with such impressive numbers in ODI cricket.
Interestingly, Hogg made his First-Class debut as a No. 6 batsman who did not bowl. Playing for Western Australia, Hogg scored 22 and 15. Hogg bowled part-time medium pace at that time, and it was only when leg-spinner Tony Mann asked Hogg to try his hand at Chinaman bowling that he discovered his true calling. Barring the occasional chat with fellow wrist-spinners, Hogg had virtually no coaching in the art of Chinaman bowling.
Hogg's skills with the bat brought him 790 ODI runs at 20 with 2 half-centuries. Given that he played for one of the strongest ODI teams in the history of the game, it is not surprising that he played a mere 65 innings in 123 ODIs.
The T20 era brought out the best in Hogg. Despite being at the twilight of his ODI career by the time T20 cricket came around, Hogg was able to sustain his form and fitness well enough that he was able to keep playing well into his 40s. He became the oldest player to feature in an IPL match, and was still active even at the age of 45, foxing batsmen half his age with his googlies.
