ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: Brendan Taylor bids farewell to Zimbabwe
ICC Cricket World Cup: Moods and Moments from India vs Zimbabwe, Auckland
New Zealand vs Zimbabwe, 1st ODI, Dunedin (Feb 3, 2012)
Zimbabwe vs India, 3rd ODI, Harare
Among the most explosive batsmen of contemporary cricket, Brendan Taylor was born with the gift to drive the ball with panache, especially through cover. Unfortunately, his career has remained confined to a handful of Tests despite his prodigious skills.
Few have cherished the burden of leadership to the extent of Taylor. While his Test average as a captain is well over the 50-mark (he has scored four hundreds in his first nine Tests as captain), it barely reaches 20 when he has not led. He has also led Zimbabwe to three Test wins, most significantly against Pakistan at Harare in 2013.
Set to score 17 in the last over in an ODI at Harare in 2006, Taylor pulled off the chase; with five required off the last ball he hit Mashrafe Mortaza over deep mid-wicket to pull off an astonishing victory. He also scored 60 not out, masterminding a chase of 139 against Australia in Zimbabwe’s first ever ICC World T20 encounter.
Drafted into the Zimbabwe side after almost the entire side had withdrawn, a teenaged Taylor took his time, but established himself in the Test team of a country scarred by the curses of corruption and inflation.
Also a good wicket-keeper, Taylor caused much hilarity when he kept without his pads on in ODIs; there has perhaps no greater display of contemporary Zimbabwean bowling.
