An opening batsman who averaged 41 in the 7 Tests he played, Bolus was a solid player with a penchant for leg side strokes. In the 12 innings in Test cricket, he never notched a single-digit score. His lowest was 14, and only twice did he get out for less than 20. Apart from his first Test innings of 14, scored in 18 minutes, he was never dismissed under 52 minutes, and in only 3 times out of the 12 did he bat less than an hour. When he batted 215 minutes for 57 at the Brabourne Stadium, he contributed heavily to Bapu Nadkarni’s 21 maiden overs on the trot.
Yet, he never scored a Test century. It was perhaps this reason which kept him from being selected for more Test matches. However, we can also consider him a bit unfortunate given that his last 5 innings in Test cricket got him 57, 39, 35, 58 and 67. After his return from that 1963-64 series, he never played again. Geoff Boycott and John Edrich took over the spots of the England opener.
Bolus played seven seasons for his native Yorkshire before moving to Nottinghamshire, captaining the latter in 1972. Later he moved again and became skipper of Derbyshire, becoming the first to captain two counties in successive seasons.
He ended with 25,598 runs from 468 First-Class matches with 39 hundreds. Later he served on the England selection committee.
