Born in Harare, Colin de Grandhomme moved to New Zealand in 2006, but not before playing for Zimbabwe Under-19 and Under-23 as well as Zimbabwe A. He was even part of Zimbabwe’s 2003-04 Under-19 World Cup side. In fact, his father Laurence and great-uncle Hilary ‘Bunny’ had both played for Zimbabwe and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe’s previous name).
He decided to move to Auckland once the Robert Mugabe regime pushed Zimbabwe cricket into doldrums. While his broad shoulders come in handy when he strikes them hard, he is deceptively slow when he sends down those medium-paced deliveries. However, he thrives in New Zealand, for the balls do quite a bit under helpful circumstances.
De Grandhomme soon made his mark in domestic cricket playing for Auckland. In 2008-09 he averaged 54.50 with bat and 24.19 with ball, which eventually lead to Auckland winning the Plunket Shield. The season propelled de Grandhomme into the New Zealand Emerging Players squad.
He continued to showcase his skills with bat, scoring over 600 runs in consecutive seasons, which earned him a Test call-up in 2016-17, against Pakistan at Christchurch. He broke many a record on arrival, taking 6 for 41 and 1 for 23 and scoring a brisk 29 in a low-scoring contest. He was named Man of the Match on Test debut.
The Test debut came almost five years after he had arrived at and disappeared from limited-overs international cricket. Curiously, he played an ODI and 4 T20Is during this stint (all in February and March 2012) he bowled a solitary over. He has indeed come a long since then.
