One of the most enthralling present day batsmen, David Warner goes about his job with identical approaches across formats. An asset to any side as an explosive batsman and a super-athletic fielder, Warner has shown tremendous development as a cricketer as well as an individual. As captain, the title victory in IPL 2016 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) features at the top in Warner’s list of achievements.

The road, however, has been tough. Censured for punching Joe Root in a Birmingham bar in the build-up to the 2013 Ashes, to Warner being involved in a public brawl with a journalist on Twitter, the general perception of Warner was not always the best.

However, with ICC keeping a close eye on him, Warner quit being the motormouth in the Australian side. He gave up alcohol completely and with the help of his wife Candice, who is also a sportsperson, Warner brought about drastic changes in his life off the field which have had a direct impact on his cricket.

Warner may have become quiet and calmer on the field, not instigating those battles, but he has been able to channel his energy in the right direction. As one of the earliest results, Warner ended 2016 with close to 1,400 runs in ODIs.

In his second Test, against New Zealand at Hobart, Warner had carried his bat. Later that season he decimated the Indians at Perth with a 159-ball 180.

He scored hundreds in each innings at Cape Town in 2013-14, and scored another hundred in his next innings. Later in 2014 he scored twin tons again, this time against India at Adelaide. And in 2015-16 at Perth against New Zealand he became only the third batsman to achieve this on three occasions. He celebrated the feat with 253 in his next innings.

In 2017 Warner became the fifth batsman in Test cricket’s history to have scored a century inside the first session on the opening day — a feat that he achieved against Pakistan at Sydney.

Having successfully transformed himself from an ‘attack dog’ to being fondly admired as ‘The Reverend’, Warner is set to go down in history as one of Australia’s finest batsmen.
