Dean Elgar rose to fame when in 2005 when he won the South African Country Districts Player of the Year award after few impressive stints within Free State. He also led South Africa Under-19s in the 2006 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka, where the team lost in the Plate semi-final. He made his First-Class debut for Free State the same year.
A healthy 225 in the debut season put him on the radar of the selectors. He averaged almost 50 in 2011. An impressive 78 in a tour match earned him a spot in the ODI squad against Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, injuries put him out of the tour.
The six year long wait finally came to an end in August 2012. Unfortunately, his ODI debut against England at Cardiff was abandoned by rain. He also made his Test debut the same year against Australia at WACA and registered a pair. The selectors had faith in him, and he responded by scoring 103 not out against New Zealand at Port Elizabeth. He followed it up with two hundreds the same year, and seems to have filled the big shoes of Graeme Smith at the top.
