Dhawal Kulkarni made an impression during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2008 after rising through the ranks in age-group cricket. He had a few limited-overs games behind him at the domestic level and went on to do a decent job for Mumbai Indians when he was put into a bigger league.
Later that year he directly made his First-Class debut while playing for India A against Australia A. A successful Ranji Trophy season followed where he was amongst Mumbai’s best. With 49 wickets at an average of 22.02 in his debut season, Kulkarni made it to the flight to New Zealand for the Test series in early 2009, but did not get a game.
Kulkarni then continued to be an integral part of the Mumbai setup for the next few years, but found it tough to break into the side again. He continued to be in the Mumbai Indians side as well, until the 2013 season. He bowls at a brisk pace and gets subtle movement off the seam. In that phase, he did appear for India A on a few occasions. During 2012-13 season he was consistent again and gradually made a comeback on the national radar. He was picked for the One-Day International (ODI) series in 2013 against the West Indies but had to withdraw due to an injury. However, after an impressive performance in the Quadrangular Series Down Under for India A, he was picked for the one-day series in England in 2014.
