Farhaan Behardien Biography

Although Farhaan Behardien has been labelled as a batting all-rounder, he has done little to enhance his reputation since he made his debut five years back. For a middle-order batsman who can bowl military medium-pace, Behardien has never really emerged as a genuine all-rounder for South Africa, a country that has been blessed with a seemingly endless string of versatile cricketers across formats. Behardien is not a player in that mould. At least his international numbers suggest so.

It took Behardien over four overs to cross the 1,000-run barrier in ODIs. The wicket count is negligible. However, if you dig through his domestic figures, a different story comes to the fore. He averages close to 40 in First-Class cricket and 37 in List A in his 13-year-long career, giving an indication of how good a player he is. He has clearly not lived up to his potential at the international level.

A late bloomer, Behardien got himself noticed only in 2011-12 after debuting way back in 2004. He was exceptional in the shorter formats that season and was even named the South African T20 Player of the Year at the 2012 awards, which paved way for his national selection. He made his T20I debut in 2012 and ODI debut in 2013. In subsequent years, he became a regular member of the limited-overs squad.

In January 2017, Behardien was named South Africa’s T20I captain for a 3-match series against Sri Lanka, albeit in the absence of number of regular players. Though he remains part of the team, he is yet to justify the talent he possesses at the highest level.
