Bangladesh vs Pakistan, Asia Cup Match 8 at Mirpur
Fawad Alam, son of Pakistan’s former First-Class cricketer, Tariq Alam, is known for his ability to make his starts count and notch up big scores in domestic circuit. He has an unusual technique. When he takes his stance, it seems like bowlers are about to thunder into the crease from mid-wicket. However, he more often than not makes it up with sheer grit and determination.
The left-handed batsman came through the ranks by playing for Pakistan’s Under-19 team. He did play a few key knocks for Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup held in Bangladesh in 2004. Alam then, made his One-Day International (ODI) debut against Sri Lanka in 2007.
He scored a hundred on Test debut at P Sara Oval in 2009, but the effort went in vain. When Pakistan toured New Zealand in 2009 though, opposition ranks exposed his tendency to get into awkward positions to play the ball on seaming decks. Since then, he has not played for Pakistan in Tests.
In ODIs, Alam made a comeback into Pakistan’s squad after almost four long years for the Asia Cup 2014. In the final of the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka, Alam showed that uncanny ability to convert starts into big scores by compiling a century. The knock wasn’t a purist’s delight, but it once again gave a glimpse of Alam’s singular vision to succeed for the sake of his country.
