Hayes scored a century on debut against the West Indies at The Oval. Akin to the boy’s effort on the burning deck, it was a futile fourth-innings knock, but underlined both elegance and character of the Lancashire batsman.
He subsequently went on a tour to West Indies in 1973-74 but could not capitalise against a largely mediocre bowling and fantastic batting wickets. By the time he played his next couple of Tests, once again with the West Indians as his opponent, the pace regime of the men from the Caribbean had started. Hence, after the 106 unbeaten runs in the second innings of his career, Hayes recorded his next best innings of 29 in his very second Test and could not beat it in 14 more ventures to the crease. Thus he ended with an average of 15.25 for his 244 runs.
However, at the county level, he was an excellent batsman with clean back-foot strokes and pleasing drives. He also had a penchant for hitting the ball hard and often. Nine years after Garry Sobers had hit Malcolm Nash for 6 sixes in an over at Swansea, the unfortunate bowler sent down an over to Hayes. In this 1977 showdown, Hayes hit him for 6, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6.
Hayes also played 6 ODIs (including 3 in the 1975 World Cup) without much success. He also scored nearly 11,000 runs for Lancashire, captaining the side from 1978 to 1980. He later became Director of Cricket at Oakham School.
