A half-century on debut against South Africa at his home ground of Headingley and another in his first away Test in India seemed to indicate that at long last Lowson was getting just returns for his perseverance.
Having made his way to the Yorkshire team after a long stint in Bradford League, Lowson had every reason to be overawed as he opened the innings with the great Len Hutton in 1949. But even as Hutton enjoyed the best season of his career, Lowson did not do too badly, managing 1,799 runs. The following season he did even better, with 2,152 runs with 5 hundreds. The style of batting was based on the solid foundations of Hutton and hence earned him the sobriquet of Hutton-clone.
He added 99 with Hutton in their first foray together into the Test world, and when a number of frontline players opted out of the 1951-52 tour to India, Pakistan and Ceylon, Lowson did make the cut. He got more than 1,000 on the tour, but after scoring 68 in the first Test at Delhi, he never quite got going. After averaging 18 for his 145 runs, he was dropped from the national side.
Lowson continued to make huge quantities of runs in the English summers and scored 6 hundreds in 1954. However, when Hutton called it a day, and England looked for someone to fill those enormous shoes, it was in 1955, Lowson’s worst summer. He did play once for England against the visiting South Africans, when he replaced Willie Watson, but Trevor Goddard got him for 5 and 0.
After 1958, with new captain Ronnie Burnet taking charge of Yorkshire, the club decided to opt for fresh blood. As a result Lowson was one of the men, along with Johnny Wardle and Bob Appleyard, to be axed.
Lowson finished his career with over 15,000 First-Class runs. He later worked in insurance.
