A forceful batsman who played for over two decades for Middlesex, Mann was noted for his powerful drives.
Not really a great batsman in the strictest sense of the word, one of the major achievements of his career was to drive a ball four times to the roof of the Pavilion at Lord’s in a match against Yorkshire. When Middlesex amassed 502 for 6 to win against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, registering the highest fourth-innings total in the Championship, Mann’s contribution was 101 not out with 15 boundary hits; he added the last 271 runs with Patsy Hendren in just 195 minutes.
Mann took an English team to South Africa in 1922-23, playing all 5 Tests as captain. He managed 2 fifties, and entertained the crowd with a brace of sixes apiece at Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. The tour was won 2-1.
In 1930, he became a member of the Test selection committee. He also became President of Middlesex and founded Cranbourne Cricket Club.
Before that, he had fought in World War I. Appointed as Officer of Scots Guards, Mann was severely injured thrice.
His son George followed his footsteps by captaining Middlesex and England. Theirs was the first instance of a father-son duo had captained either Middlesex or England. Another son, John, played for Cambridge and Middlesex as well as well as represented Eton in six different sports. Unfortunately, George’s son Simon became a mercenary, and was arrested in the 2004 Equatorial Guinea coup d’état attempt.
