Fred Barratt Biography

One of the many careers interrupted by War, Fred Barratt bowled fast and successfully to capture 115 wickets at 22 in the 1914 season. This included 8 for 91 on debut as Nottinghamshire played MCC at Lord’s. However, for reasons which remain unknown, captain AO Jones did not bowl him in the second innings as MCC followed on.

When he restarted his career after World War I, he was slow to get among the wickets. However, he was exceptional in 1923 and 1924. A loss of form in the middle of the 1920s was shrugged off in flamboyant style in 1928, when he captured 114 wickets and managed to convert his exciting lower-order hitting into consistency, blasting two quick hundreds against Glamorgan and Warwickshire. The 139 at Coventry included 18 fours and 7 sixes, as he was promoted to push the score along. Nottinghamshire declared at 656 for 3, after 196 had been added between Barratt and Willis Walker in 85 minutes. He got 1,167 runs at 29 that season, and formed the third prong of an exceptional pace attack that included Harold Larwood and Bill Voce.

The splendid all-round form led to a Test outing at Old Trafford, against South Africa. It was a turner, and Tich Freeman captured 12 wickets with Barratt’s pace getting 2 for 38 from 30 tidy overs spread across innings. He went to the New Zealand tour under Harold Gilligan in the winter of 1929-30 but did not quite make an impression in the 4 Tests. But when the team played tour matches in Australia, he captured 9 for 93 against South Australia and 7 for 105 against Victoria.

On return to England, he had one of his worst seasons and moved away from the scene after 1931. Barratt retired with 1,224 wickets at 23, alongside 6,445 runs at 16.
