Ivan Barrow was probably the finest West Indian wicketkeeper between the Wars, and the first gloveman from the nation to get a regular place in the national side. He often stood up to the ferocious pace of Manny Martindale and Learie Constantine, sometimes in glasses, much to the amazement of spectators.
Barrow was, in all probability, the second Jewish cricketer (after Fred Susskind) to play Test cricket. He went to Wolmer’s Boys School, Kingston, perhaps the only school in the world to have produced six Test wicketkeepers.
On his debut in the timeless Test at Jamaica during England’s 1929-30 tour of West Indies, Barrow conceded a mere 6 byes, keeping wickets for 1,549 balls.
On the Australian tour that followed Barrow played 5 Tests, keeping wickets competently; unfortunately, his most famous moment came in the Adelaide Test, when he was trapped LBW to become Don Bradman’s first Test wicket. He had his moment of glory at Melbourne, stumping Bill Ponsford off the pace of Constantine.
Against Lord Tennyson’s men in 1931-32 he added 248 with George Headley, matching him stroke for stroke. In the second innings he anchored the chase to pull off a win.
In 1933 he became the first West Indian to score a hundred on English soil, reaching the landmark when his partner Headley was on 99.
He was mysteriously dropped thereafter as Cyril Christiani was drafted in, though he made a comeback after his rival passed away at a mere 25.
Barrow later worked as Promotions Officer in Jamaican Industrial Development Corporation. He passed away in 1979, at an age of 68.
