Jason Roy of Surrey was one the fresh faces introduced by England when they revamped their limited-overs sides after the 2015 World Cup debacle. Roy’s aggressive approach has played a key role in the resurrection of England’s success in limited-overs cricket since then.
Pinned to the top of an explosive line-up, Roy is more conventional than most of the men who follow him in the order. His biggest innings, a 118-ball 162, came when England chased down 308 in a 42-over match comfortably against Sri Lanka at The Oval in 2015.
Two matches before that he added an unbroken 256 (in 34.1 overs) with Alex Hales against the same opposition at Edgbaston. It remains the biggest ODI stand for any wicket for England.
However, his two most significant innings were in the World T20 2016. After South Africa set England a near-impossible 230, Roy smashed a 16-ball 43, obliterating Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada. In the semi-final, too, his 44-ball 78 decided the match in favour of England: he showed exemplary footwork to dominate the New Zealand spinners, who had done remarkably well throughout the tournament.
Born in Durban, Roy had moved to England at 10. Within two years he was playing for Surrey Under-13s. He earned reputation as a fielder at a young age, and was used as a substitute by England in their 2008 Test against South Africa at The Oval.
Roy is also in demand in T20 tournaments across the world, and has played for Chittagong Kings, Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers, Lahore Qalandars, and Gujarat Lions.
Unfortunately, he is yet to find a groove in red-ball cricket. He did get 1,078 runs at 51.33 in the summer of 2014, but barring that he has not done anything significant enough to earn a spot in the Test side.
