Overlooked when the selectors were scavenging for an opening partner for Sunil Gavaskar, Lalchand Rajput was picked only after the Little Master decided to bat down the order. He played 2 Tests, both on the 1985-86 tour of Sri Lanka, opening batting with Krishnamachari Srikkanth.
He stood firm with 32 out of 49 scored by India during his stay in the first innings on debut at SSC. In the second innings he helped save the Test with a resolute 61, adding 76 with Dilip Vengsarkar. Unfortunately, he managed 0 and 12 in the next Test at P Sara (that India lost), and never played another Test.
He also played 4 ODIs, which fetched him 0, 1*, 0, and 8; he had the ignominy of being only the 4th top-order batsman to score a golden duck on ODI debut.
An old-fashioned opener who believed in grafting innings rather than dominating attacks, Rajput scored 7,988 First-Class runs at 49. His best phase came in 1986-87 and 1987-88: the two seasons fetched him 1,809 runs at 67 with 8 hundreds. His most famous innings during the phase was a 281-ball 275 in a 1987-88 Duleep Trophy match against Central Zone.
Rajput played till 1998-99. He became a Ranji Trophy umpire. He served as coach of Bombay Under-19 and managed India’s team during their successful World T20 campaign of 2007 as well as the tour of Australia that followed. He also coached Mumbai Indians, and was somewhat inexplicably banned 50 per cent of his match fee after Harbhajan Singh slapped S Sreesanth. He was named Afghanistan coach in 2016.
