Luke Ronchi has a unique distinction of playing cricket for two neighbouring cricketing nations — Australia and New Zealand. In fact, he is the only player in the history of the game to play for both these nations.
Born in Manawatu, New Zealand, Ronchi migrated to Australia at a very early age. He made his First-Class debut for Western Australia in 2001-2002. His ODI debut for Australia came in 2008 immediately after he played the inaugural IPL for Mumbai Indians, when he was drafted in the team as replacement for the injured Brad Haddin. He then made a 22-ball 36 on T20I debut, against West Indies at Barbados.
With not many opportunities coming his way in the following years, Ronchi decided to move back to the land of his birth in February 2012 after playing just 4 ODIs and 3 T20Is for Australia. Since then he has been a regular feature in New Zealand's ODI and T20I squads.
Ronchi proved his worth early just ahead of the 2015 World Cup, when he massacred the Sri Lankan bowling en route to an undefeated 170 off only 99 balls at Dunedin. However, he flopped in the World Cup at home, scoring just 73 runs from 9 matches.
The same year he Ronchi made his Test debut for New Zealand. He was also part of the World T20 in India the following year. Of late he has often been batting at the top of the order.
