Mahmudullah Biography

Mahmudullah, almost always referred to with a one-word name for some mysterious reason, has come a long way in cementing his place in the Bangladesh squad. His role as an all-rounder cannot be questioned: he has a tremendous career in the domestic circuit, and has carried on into the international level as well.

A hard-hitting batsman and an off-spinner, Mahmudullah made his international debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka at Dhaka, scoring 36 and taking 2 for 28. He had to wait another two years to get a Test cap. Once he was there he performed exceedingly well, with 3 for 59 and 5 for 51 against West Indies; he followed that with 4 for 81 in the next Test as Bangladesh completed a clean sweep.

A man for all seasons, Mahmudullah can bat in any position in the middle-order. His off-spinners were doing a lot of damage even outside the subcontinent. As his career rolled on, he found bowling opportunities limited with the inclusion of quality spinners like Shakib-Al-Hasan, Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam in the Bangladesh side.

The other highlights of his career were his 115 at No. 8 in New Zealand and 96* against India — both in 2010. He made history in the 2015 World Cup by becoming the first Bangladesh batsman to score consecutive hundreds — 103 in a match-winning effort against England at Adelaide; this was followed by 128* against New Zealand in a closely fought 3-wicket loss.

Despite batting low down the order in most games and bowling opportunities being reduced, Mahmudullah is considered an integral part of the Bangladesh side. He was named in the Bangladesh squad for the 2017 Champions Trophy — a tournament Bangladesh would be a part of for the first time.
