Maninder emerged on the scene as a 17-year-old who oozed talent. Hailed as the next Bishan Singh Bedi, he was the protégé of the great man and seemed to have all the weapons in his arsenal to walk along his giant footsteps. Somewhere along the line he stumbled.
After a rather premature introduction to Test cricket, Maninder demonstrated his phenomenal talent in England, during the second innings of the Headingley Test. His flight, loop, variations and the ability to spin the ball delighted many.
Back in India, he gained dubious fame by becoming the final wicket to fall in the Tied Test of Madras. But soon he claimed his first ten-for against Sri Lanka at Nagpur. In the following series, he had the Pakistanis on their knees during the initial phase of the famous Bangalore Test, when he claimed five wickets before lunch on the first day and finished with 7 for 27, and had an excellent outing in Reliance World Cup 1987.
He had added a vicious arm-ball to his arsenal, and seemed destined to become another of the Indian spinning greats. Add to that, his electric fielding was second only to Mohammad Azharuddin.
But there followed a three-year phase during which he claimed 4 wickets in 6 Tests. A Test against Zimbabwe in 1993 got him 4 more wickets, but by then he had missed his bus and numerous changes to action rendered him almost unrecognisable. A successful attempt at improving on his ordinary batting skills did not help.
He later became a commentator and analyst on television.
