Manoj Tiwary Biography

‘Unlucky’ will be a mild word if one has to describe Manoj Tiwary’s international career. And the time is slipping for the Bengal talisman in international cricket. He had made his India debut a month before Virat Kohli made headlines as India Under-19’s World Cup-winning captain in 2008. A dream season in 2006-07 saw him amass 796 runs at 99.50. He almost guided Bengal to a Ranji Trophy title as well. Manoj was labelled the next star. Some christened him Chhota Dada (in reference to Sourav Ganguly); others called him India’s Kevin Pietersen.

Manoj found himself in the squad for the Bangladesh tour that followed India’s dismal 2007 World Cup campaign. Unfortunately, he ended up injuring his shoulder on the eve of what would have been his debut. He returned after a surgery and struck a fine hundred in the Irani Trophy. He scored at over 45 in the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy.

His ODI debut finally came in February 2008 at Brisbane, coincidentally the same venue where Ganguly had made his, in 1991-92. A jetlagged Manoj turned out to be no match for Brett Lee. He was benched for all the following games as India went on to lift the trophy.

He was then acquired for a whopping US$ 675,000 by Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural IPL auction. His run was hampered due to injuries. In 2010, he was transferred to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Injuries and benches remained a major part of his international cricket. Otherwise, he remained a stalwart for Bengal cricket (if fit). Ganguly’s wait for his second international lasted four-and-a-half years; Manoj’s was a year less. He made a comeback in 2011 and made sporadic appearances over six months. When he got a game against the visiting West Indians later that year, he provided a Man of the Match show, slamming an ODI ton in tough humid conditions before being benched again. He was not picked for a single game in the Australia tour that followed.

Eight months after his hundred he got another opportunity. He contributed with a four-for in India’s win against Sri Lanka. In the following ODI he struck 65 and contributed in India’s 4-1 routing of Sri Lanka. His next appearance came after a two-year long hiatus. During the same time, under MS Dhoni’s leadership, Rohit Sharma kept being persisted with despite prolonged failures. However, the benchmark varied when it came to Manoj.

Manoj struck 3 tons in Ranji Trophy 2008-09. He averaged 57 in Ranji Trophy 2009-10; his 80* played a role in Rest of India’s Irani Cup win that season. His average propelled to 75 in 2010-11, the highlight being 233* against Saurashtra. He continued his form in the Duleep Trophy as well. In 2011-12 he averaged 149 in Ranji Trophy. This included his 267 against Madhya Pradesh, in a team total of 496.

In IPL 2012 he smacked the finishing runs for KKR in their maiden tournament triumph.

He top-scored for India A with 93 against the touring England side in 2012-13; the Test cap was still not in sight despite India losing 1-2 to England at home. He top-scored with 129 against the Australians later that season, but once again he did not get the Test cap: Ajinkya Rahane made his debut instead. The following year he led India A on an Australia tour, scored 2 fifties, and drew the series.

He scored at over 46 in Ranji Trophy 2015-16 and almost 50 in 2016-17. With the younger brigade — Karun Nair, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant — in fray, Manoj’s Test cap looks distant for now. In 2014-15 he led East Zone to a Deodhar Trophy title where he was the highest run-getter; he had scored 151 in the semi-final and 75 in the final. He led East Zone to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Inter Zonal Title in 2016-17 and had another good run with the bat. He played a crucial role for Rising Pune Supergiant’s success in IPL 2017, amassing 324 runs at at strike rate of over 137.

Flamboyance has made way for grit. Tiwary continues to lead Bengal and remains their batting backbone.
