ICC World T20 2016, Australia overview: Once again to start among favourites
Mitchell Marsh with partner Isabelle Platt
Titans vs Perth Scorchers, CLT20 2012 Group A match, Centurion
Australia vs England, ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Match 2
Touted as potentially the best Australian all-rounder, Mitchell Marsh first made headlines when he captained Australia to the ICC Under-19 World Cup title in 2010 in New Zealand. ODI and T20I debuts followed in 2011, but it was not till 2014 that he made an impact.
A match-winning 89 off 83 balls against Zimbabwe in only his fifth ODI gave a good idea of his talent, but it was three games later that he made the world truly sit up and take notice. With Australia meandering to an average score, he turned the game on its head with a top-quality 86 not out off 51 balls including three sixes in a row of Dale Steyn.
With cricket in his blood — his father Geoff is the only player to win a World Cup as both player and coach, while his brother Shaun is one of Australia’s brightest (albeit unfulfilled) talents — Mitchell has all the credentials of emerging as one of the top players in the modern game.
Though his bowling is not quite as threatening as his batting, a First-Class bowling average of under 30 and a strike rate of around 55 suggest that he is capable of holding his own with ball in had as well. The youngest Marsh could yet be the best (he is the only one with Test wicket too!).
