The undisputed leader of the Australian pace attack, Mitchell Starc has taken up the mantle successfully from the previous batch of fast bowlers like Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris, whose successive retirements left Australia necessitous after the highs of winning The Ashes at home (2013-14) and losing in England (2015).
Starc has strongly emerged as one of the best young fast bowlers in international cricket, across formats, and the 2015 World Cup provided a testament to that. Honoured with the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award for his 22 wickets in the tournament, there is no exaggeration in saying that Starc sealed Australia’s win in the final right at the start, cleaning up the fiery Brendon McCullum for cheap.
With a tall frame and a strong arm, Starc releases the ball from a great height. What makes him unplayable is his ability to move the ball both ways, which has established Starc as a bowler who has the knack of striking at regular intervals. His in-swinging yorkers, especially to the right-handers, generally produce favourable results.
An ankle injury kept him away for more than six months, but not before Starc sent down one of the fastest deliveries in Test cricket. At Perth he sent down a 160.4 kmph delivery to Ross Taylor during the Trans-Tasman Trophy 2015-16.
But Starc is not all about pace and bounce. He returned to cricket after a long injury lay off with one of the toughest tours for Australia in recent years. In Sri Lanka, Australia lost 0-3, but Starc entered his name in the history books with 24 wickets in 3 Tests — the most by any Australian fast bowler in a 3-Test series.
In the ODIs that followed, Starc set the new world record of becoming the fastest to 100 wickets.
More than handy with bat, Starc smashed 99 at Mohali during the India tour of 2012-13. The same year, he cracked a 71-ball 66 at the Old Trafford. But his best batting performance came in the home summer of 2016-17, when Starc clobbered 7 sixes in his 91-ball 84, the most sixes by a batsman in a Test innings at the ‘G’.
