Moeen Ali Biography

Moeen Ali demonstrated a penchant for quick scoring from very early days — ransacking 195 for his under-15 Club in a T20 outing. A few years later he clubbed a 56-ball hundred in an Under-19 Test against Sri Lanka. And he came of age in international cricket with a magnificent back to the wall Test hundred scored over six hours.

He played for England at both the Under-15 and Under-19 levels. With maturity, his strokeplay lived up to the youthful promise while developing sheen and class, and he became a major attraction for Worcestershire. His off-breaks, always useful sometimes potent, add a definite edge to his elegant left-handed strokeplay.

His initial forays in T20Is, including the World Cup in Bangladesh, were tepid. Yet he continued to work on his game in all the departments. Saeed Ajmal’s assistance helped him to develop the mysterious doosra The 2013 County Championship saw him pile on 1375 runs at 62.50 and pick 28 wickets at 33.71. The versatility pitch-forked him into the England team as an all-rounder.

Moeen made his debut against Sri Lanka at Lord’s in 2014 and had the misfortune of being picked on by a handful of nitpicking journalists about the flowing beard he sported for admitted religious reasons. However, the unfair haranguing did not seem to bother him as he dispatched Rangana Herath for a six in his first innings 48 and dismissed Kumar Sangakkara as his maiden wicket. In the Test that followed, he almost performed the miracle of saving England from a hopeless situation by batting through the final day, remaining unbeaten on a magnificent 108.

With his quick eye, wonderful wrists, willingness to learn and improve and exceptional temperament, this young man of Pakistani origins is one of the brighter prospects of the England side.
