Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami spoil Pakistan’s party at ICC Cricket World Cup 2015
Memorable Debuts in 2013

Zaheer Khan’s emergence as a top-class fast bowler encouraged many young Indians to take up this art, Mohammed Shami happens to be among them. Shami moved to West Bengal at 17 in his bid to make it big in international cricket. He seemed to be on track to fulfil his dreams and take the mantle from Zaheer when an injury put the progress on halt in 2015. However, that did not stop Shami from becoming India's leading fast bowler in World Cup 2015. He battled a knee injury to end up with 17 wickets in the tournament.
A master of reverse-swing even at an early stage of his career Shami had a good season for Bengal in 2011-12 and came onto the national radar when he toured West Indies with India A in 2012. Shami claimed 28 wickets at 21 from 5 games in the 2012-13 domestic season and the ODI doors opened for him.
In 2013, becoming the second-fastest Indian (29 matches) to 50 ODI wickets behind Ajit Agarkar, who achieved the landmark in 23 matches. When he picked up an injury in 2015, he was head and shoulders above all other Indian bowlers in terms of ODI average and strike rate.
In October 2013, during Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series, Shami made his Test debut against West Indies at his home ground Eden Gardens. He responded to the selectors’ faith with a 9-wicket haul on debut.
The ability to move the ball, both new and old, both ways — without any visible change of action — allows him to keep batsmen on their toes and not get comfortable playing against him. Lower down the order, Shami can wield the willow hard. In England in 2014, he and Bhuvneshwar Kumar recorded the second-highest 10th-wicket partnership for India in Tests, when they added 111 at Trent Bridge.
He also had a stint with Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL before Delhi Daredevils acquired him in 2014 for a whopping INR 4.25 crores.
In 2016 he became a part of history when he became the first Indian bowler to take 5 wickets in an innings with the pink ball. He achieved the feat in CAB Super League Final for Mohun Bagan in a Second-Class game.
Regaining fitness, Shami made a comeback to the national fold in 2016. Having fallen behind Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah as preferred pacer, Shami did not get a game in World T20 2016. A fit Shami is vital to India’s scheme of things but how he makes a comeback from the series of injuries and manages them will determine his future with Indian cricket.
