Morne Morkel Biography

Morne Morkel’s towering frame, his broad shoulders (despite a lanky frame), unwavering aggression, lethal pace, and brutal approach give him the ability to scythe through the strongest line-ups that he often extracts from a length. His greatest strength is his bounce (at screaming pace) that he generates as an outcome of the triple-advantage of his height, biceps, and wrists.

Once a new-ball bowler, Morkel has been relegated to first-change after the appearance of Vernon Philander. Not that he complains: after all, who does not want to come on to bowl after Dale Steyn had softened the batsmen and Philander had foxed them with the new ball?

Morkel was spotted by Allan Donald, but it took him time to build his reputation. The breakthrough spell came at Centurion in 2010-11: with some support from Steyn, Morkel ripped apart the Indians with figures of five for 20. The Indians had found him too hot to handle.

A year later he unleashed another spell of hostile fast bowling at Basin Reserve after Steyn not at his fittest: New Zealand were set 389, and Morkel had to leave ground after an injury. He eventually finished with six for 23, but those were the only wickets South Africa could manage.

Had he not had persistent issues with the no-ball, Morkel’s talent would have made him even more threatening. He had nevertheless played a key role in South Africa’s ascent to the top of Test cricket, and will, in all expectations, continue to do the same in the years to come.
