Morne van Wyk Biography

Morne van Wyk became a wicketkeeper more by force rather than his choice. He had started his career as an opening batsman. However, owing to his natural ability to handle the ball on field with brilliant diving skills, he was forced to undergo his ability behind the wicket. The second skill grew, and van Wyk became a regular wicketkeeper for Free States since 2002-03.

Owing to his talent behind the wicket, he earned his maiden national call against England in 2003, but was dropped subsequently. He played his next game after almost four years where he scored 52 and 44 against Ireland and 82 against India in 2007. The very same year he made his T20I debut against Pakistan at Johannesburg.

The presence of Mark Boucher and the rise of AB de Villiers restricted him from making it to the XI. With age taking toll and the arrival of a younger generation in the form of Quinton de Kock, his international career was headed nowhere. However, he often leads South Africa A, and is a dazzling strokeplayer in T20s. He scored the fastest T20I fifty by a South African from just 24 balls, and led Dolphins to a Ram Slam T20 title.
