His handsome looks, the natty dress sense, the aesthetic appeal of his batsmanship and the legendary feat of walking out of a plane and scoring 74 and 101 at Adelaide have gone on to make Jaisimha an icon in Indian cricket — one who led Sunil Gavaskar to christen his son after him.

Yet, as with most icons of the 1960s, Jaisimha’s career was of plenty of promise but little substance. His few peaks, 3 hundreds and a handful of half-centuries, were sprinkled lightly across many, many ephemeral innings. His final average of 30.68 tells a rather sordid tale if only the followers can the game can keep the dazzle of the personality from taking the focus away from the numbers.

However, in spite of the mediocre bottom line, there were memorable highlights. The 129 at Calcutta against England was a knock to delight romantics, and stubborn resistance four years earlier had seen him defy the wiles of Richie Benaud and bat through all five days of a Test match.

He is also reputed to be one of the best captains who never led India, although the regular captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi constantly turned out under his leadership in domestic cricket. His insights were supposed to be vital in the triumph of Ajit Wadekar’s team in West Indies in 1970-71.
