A neat wicketkeeper who hailed from the Andhra side, Prasad had to be really good to clinch that one spot with the big gloves in the Indian side. Especially so because stumpers from stronger domestic sides enjoyed far more chances to impress the selectors. However, excellent showing during the India A tour to Pakistan in 1997-98 ensured that Prasad was busy knocking on the national doors.
He slid his hands into the enormous gloves of Nayan Mongia following an injury to the regular ’keeper. He kept in the series against New Zealand and then again in Australia. However, by the time the disastrous series Down Under came to an end, the battered and bruised Indian batting had ensured that Prasad was being pushed to open the innings. He managed 52 runs in the series, at 8.66. Not really a very good batsman even in the domestic circuit, the front-of-the-stumps demands from the modern wicketkeeper were a bit too much for him. He lost his place in the side.
Prasad did improve with the bat, and a couple of seasons later scored 130 apiece against Himachal Pradesh and Hyderabad, ending with 754 runs at 44.35 for the 2002-03 season. But, first the big gloves went back to Mongia, and then for some days changed hands from Parthiv Patel to Deep Dasgupta to Dinesh Karthik, before settling down around the hands that rocked the nation, those of MS Dhoni. Prasad did not quite make it back. However, he did captain the Andhra side before retiring.
He was named National Chairman of Selectors in 2016.
