One of the most sought-after uncapped players in the Indian Premier League 2016 player auction, Murugan Ashwin is a right-arm leg-break and googly bowler with an awkward-looking action. Ashwin made his First-Class debut in 2012 for Tamil Nadu against Odisha, but he played only 3 matches in his first season and dropped off the map after that.

Ashwin made his List-A debut against Mumbai in 2015, impressing with a spell of 3 for 38. However, once again he fell away after a handful of appearances.

It was in Twenty20 cricket that Ashwin found his feet. Having made his debut for Tamil Nadu against Haryana in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2015-16, he ended up having a successful season where he snared 10 wickets at an impressive average of 12.70 at an economy rate of 5.52.

The MS Dhoni-led Rising Pune Supergiants brought Murugan for a whopping Rs 4.5 crore in the IPL 2016 auction from his base price of only Rs 10 lakh. Murugan was a regular net bowler for the now-suspended Chennai Super Kings.
