PHOTO: Mushfiqur Rahim as a kid
Mushfiqur Rahim burst onto the international scene in 2005 when he was thrown to the lions at Lord’s at an age of 16. He won the battle with Dhiman Ghosh as the rightful successor to Khaled Mashud, and has never looked back since.
It was almost impossible to believe that the little chatterbox Mushfiqur, all of 160 cm and a perpetual dash of zinc oxide on his face, was asked to lead Bangladesh at 23. By the time he turned 26 he had led Bangladesh in more Tests than anyone. The triple-burden of leadership, wicketkeeping, and being a batting mainstay has never shown on him.
An efficient batsman who can switch gears either way according to the situation, Mushfiqur’s average has been approaching the 35-mark, which is acceptable for a wicket-keeper and excellent for a Bangladeshi, given that he does not get to play weak sides very often. His finest hour came at Galle in 2013, when he became the first Bangladeshi to register a Test double-hundred.
Efficient and ebullient with his glovework, Mushfiqur has that rare ability to raise the morale of his side — one that boasts of no major star barring Shakib-Al-Hasan — with his indomitable spirit and nonstop banter. Seldom has a man played a role as talismanic at so young an age.
