Few cricketers have influenced the sport in their country to the extent Paras Khadka has. A middle-order batsman and a medium-fast bowler, Khadka is the all-rounder around whom the Nepal team revolves. But more importantly, Khadka has been the man under whom Nepal have discovered themselves as a strong unit.
Khadka represented Nepal in three Under-19 World Cups. During those days he was mostly a bowler, who claimed 23 wickets from 17 matches at 18.60 and an economy rate of 3.16. With time, however, he developed as a batsman.
When Nepal won their first ever T20I, against Hong Kong in World T20 2014, Khadka played a pivotal role with a 37-ball 41 and also took a wicket with his first ball. He led Nepal to a historic win over Afghanistan four days later, and masterminded a successful chase against Netherlands at their den.
When Nepal brushed off the horrors of the 2015 earthquake, they needed heroes, icons they could look up to. They found them in their cricket teams, who had to brave the handicap of not being able to practise in their own country following the catastrophe.
But, under Khadka, they re-emerged like a phoenix, and are all set to take on the world again. The reaction of the Nepalese after Khadka’s maiden List A hundred, against Namibia in 2016, bears testimony to how much the man means to a nation where cricket, despite not the best in quality, has never been short on enthusiasm.
