It can be unmanageable to ascertain which one of Parthiv’s two different stints with the national side was better.
The first stint began in 2002, when India were still finding their feet in Test cricket with several cricketers peaking at the right time together. With his Test debut in 2002 at Trent Bridge, Parthiv etched his name in history books as he became the youngest ever wicketkeeper-batsman in Test cricket at 17 years 153 days.
From 2002 to 2004 Parthiv enjoyed being India’s first-choice wicketkeeper. But the ascent of MS Dhoni across formats and then becoming the captain, a comeback became next to impossible for Parthiv. By then, he had failed to convince selectors with his wicketkeeping skills and had traversed 13 Tests to get to his maiden fifty.
On the Pakistan tour of 2003-04 Parthiv scored 62* at Lahore and 69 at Rawalpindi. He returned home to score 46 and 54 against Australia, but they were not enough for him to retain his place.
Parthiv spent years honing his batting as well as glovework. But when an opportunity finally arrived during the home series against England in 2016-17, he pounced on it.
Parthiv made a Test comeback after eight years and 107 days — the longest gap for any Indian. He celebrated the recall with 42 and 67* at Mohali, sealing an unassailable lead for India in the third Test. In the run-fest at Chennai he opened and contributed with 71. However, several missed chances behind the wickets kept the debate raging on who was India’s best wicketkeeper.
He might be scantily built, but nothing has stopped the brave Parthiv from achieving what he has. A hard-nosed cricketer who once shot back at a batsman asking Parthiv to tie his shoelace by saying ‘go fly a kite’ in the Under-19 World Cup in 2002, he has emerged as one of the strongest characters in Indian cricket.
Closer to home, Parthiv focussed his energies on making Gujarat a formidable unit. Appointed captain in 2006, he led Gujarat to the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament in 2012-13 and in 2014-15 and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2015-16. However, the watershed moment in Parthiv’s career arrived in Ranji Trophy 2016-17, when Gujarat won India’s principal tournament for the first time in their second attempt. In the final against 41-time champions Mumbai, Parthiv led the demolition.
