If one ignores the fact that Suresh Raina has Kashmiri origins, Parvez Rasool became the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to make it to the Indian squad when he was picked for the tour to Zimbabwe in 2013. It was a great achievement for Rasool, who has become an icon of sorts for his state.
An all-rounder who bowls off-spin, Rasool has been a dependable performer for his state since his debut in 2008. The 2012-13 was his breakthrough season and that helped him get selected for India, for whom he played quite a few times during the year 2013.
Rasool’s journey has not been smooth. In 2009, the Bangalore police had detained him during a Champions League T20 (CLT20) game at Chinnaswamy as there were suspicions of traces of explosives in his bag. However, he was released as there was nothing found. Since then Rasool rose to become a cricketing hero. He took it in his stride and then presented hope to Jammu and Kashmir.
Rasool captained Jammu and Kashmir to the Ranji Trophy quarter-final in 2013-14. He led the way through the tournament with a good all-round performance and kept himself on the selector’s radar when he was selected for the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy.
Rasool is more of a batsman for his state, but is mainly used as a bowling all-rounder by most other sides. He has a conventional action, which was moulded under the guidance of Bishan Singh Bedi. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he has played for Pune Warriors India and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
