Phiroze Palia possessed the elegance one associates left-handed batsmen with, but he seldom converted them to big scores. Had his steady left-arm spin been used more, Palia could have been yet another addition in India’s arsenal of quality all-rounders in the 1930s alongside CK Nayudu, Amar Singh, Nazir Ali, and Naoomal Jaoomal.
His Test career was restricted to two ordinary outings, but a tally of 4,536 runs at 32 and 208 wickets at 24 at First-Class level make impressive reading.
Breaking through to the Bombay Quadrangular in his teens, Palia earned a reputation with his all-round skills for Parsees. Vizzy selected him on his team’s tour of Ceylon; the side also consisted of Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe.
Palia was selected for the 1932 tour of England after a string of solid performances in the trial matches. At 21, he was the second-youngest member of the side, after Amar Singh. He also made it to the 1936 tour, but did not get a Test.
He led United Province to a Ranji Trophy final, where they were beaten by 10 wickets by Maharashtra. Palia scored 216 out of a team score of 355 when nobody else reached 20.
He later became a Test selector and a radio commentator.
